Latency in Trade Copying: What You Need to Know
It impacts your trading results big time. Learn how you can minimize it!

In trading, every millisecond counts. No matter what system you use, every trade has to pass through multiple networks before execution. This means latency exists whether you're trading manually or using a trade copier. The key is to minimize it as much as possible to optimize your results.
What Is Latency?
Latency is simply the time delay between taking an action and seeing its effect. In trade copying, it refers to the lag between when a trade is placed on the master account and when it gets replicated on the slave account.
This delay can range from just a few milliseconds to several seconds, depending on a few factors.
Why Does Latency Matter in Trade Copying?
1. Slippage
If there’s a delay, the trade on the slave account might execute at a different price than the master account. This is especially risky in fast-moving markets, where prices change within fractions of a second. The result? You lose potential profits or take on extra risk.
2. Missed Opportunities
In high-frequency or short-term trading, speed is everything. A slight delay can mean missing out on profitable trades entirely.
3. Desynchronization
If latency is too high, your slave account may fall out of sync with the master account. This can lead to inconsistent trading results, where trades are executed too late or not at all.
What Causes Latency in Trade Copying?
1. Broker Execution Speed
Even if your trade copier is lightning-fast, your broker’s execution speed can introduce delays. Some brokers process orders faster than others. So go with brokers known for low-latency execution and fast order processing.
2. Server Location
The physical distance between your broker’s servers and the trade copier’s cloud infrastructure plays a big role in latency. The closer they are, the faster the trades execute. Easy solution? Choose brokers with servers located near the trade copier’s data centers to reduce transmission time.
3. Trade Copier Type
Not all trade copiers work the same way.
Local (non-cloud) trade copiers run on a trader’s personal device and depend on the internet connection and computer performance, which can slow things down. Cloud-based trade copiers (like Duplikium) run on dedicated high-speed servers, eliminating internet-related delays and ensuring 1-3ms internal latency.
If speed matters to you and don’t want the technical hassle of setting up, a cloud-based trade copier is the best option. It removes the need for a powerful PC, VPS, or a high-speed internet connection on the trader’s side.
How to Minimize Latency in Trade Copying
Using a cloud-based trade copier already eliminates a lot of the traditional latency issues, but if you’re using a non-cloud solution, you might need extra optimizations.
1. Choose the Right Broker
Your broker’s execution speed is the biggest factor after trade copier performance. Look for brokers with low-latency servers near financial hubs, fast order execution times, and minimal slippage and requotes.
2. Use the Right Cloud-Based Trade Copier
Unlike traditional software that relies on your device, a cloud-based trade copier runs on high-performance servers, ensuring near-instant execution without worrying about your PC or internet speed.
3. VPS for Non-Cloud Users
If you're using a non-cloud trade copier, you need a VPS (Virtual Private Server) close to your broker’s servers to reduce latency. With a cloud-based trade copier, you can skip the VPS entirely since everything is already optimized for speed.
4. Monitor Broker Execution Times
Even with a fast trade copier, your broker's execution time matters. Keep an eye on order execution speed and spreads to make sure you’re getting the best possible trade performance.
How You Can Optimize Your Duplikium Trade Copier for Lowest Latency Possible
For Duplikium customers, our internal latency is typically just 1-3 ms; however, overall latency depends on your broker's performance and speed. To ensure minimal latency when using your trade copier, you can:
1. Choose a server location closer to your Slave broker. Our servers are strategically located in Frankfurt, Singapore, London, and US East. With a Subscription Plan, you can select the optimal server location nearest to your broker, significantly improving latency. You will see a cogwheel icon at the top navigation bar; scroll down, and you will see the server options.
2. Get a Dedicated Server add-on, allowing you to host the Cloud Trade Copier on your own exclusive server in London (US East available upon request). Dedicated resources ensure optimal low latency, superior stability, and consistent reliability, which are crucial factors for executing high-performance trading strategies. Dedicated Servers start as low as 180 EUR monthly when paid annually. Subscribe here: https://www.trade-copier.com/pricing/add-ons
Latency impacts trade performance, but with the right trade copier, server location, and fast broker, you can reduce delays and trade more efficiently. A cloud-based trade copier eliminates common issues, ensuring seamless, high-speed trade replication. Still using a non-cloud copier? Try our cloud-based Trade Copier for FREE. While server location options won’t be in the free plan, testing with a free plan should give you a good measure of how it works and the perks of having the RIGHT trade copier at your corner!
