VPS and Copy Trading: What You Actually Need (and What You Don't)
What is a VPS, and do you need it for copying trades?

You know when you open two broker platforms side by side and see slightly different bid/ask, or the same trade triggers differently? VPS. You need a VPS. Your trades will fail without a VPS."
It's one of the most common questions we get from new users, and one of the biggest misconceptions in the copy trading world. So let's clear it up once and for all.
First things first: what is a VPS?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is essentially a computer that runs in a data center, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Traders rent one so they can keep their trading platform, usually MT4 or MT5, running around the clock without leaving their home PC switched on.
Why does that matter? Because traditional trade copiers are software-based. They're installed as an Expert Advisor (EA) directly on your MetaTrader platform. And here's the catch: an EA only works while the platform is open and connected. Close your laptop, lose your internet connection, or let Windows run an update at 3 a.m., and your copier stops copying. Trades get missed. Positions don't close. Things go wrong.
For those setups, a VPS is a must. And it comes with real costs: typically $15–50 per month, plus the time spent setting it up, maintaining it, restarting it after crashes, and monitoring it to make sure everything is still running.
Why Duplikium is different
Duplikium was built to eliminate exactly this problem.
Our Trade Copier is 100% cloud-based. There's no software to install, no EA to attach to your charts, and nothing running on your computer at all. You simply connect your Master and Slave accounts through our web-based Cockpit, define your copy settings, and the copying happens entirely on our servers 24/7. Our internal latency is just 1-5 milliseconds.
What does this mean for you?
- No VPS needed: not for your Master account, not for your Slave accounts
- No need to keep PC running 24/7: shut down your computer, go on holiday, sleep soundly
- No installation or maintenance: everything is managed in the cloud
Once your accounts are connected, our infrastructure handles everything. Your trades are copied whether your computer is on or off, whether you're at your desk or on a beach.
The one exception: running an EA on your Master account
Now, here's where a VPS can still come into the picture, but it's important to understand that this has nothing to do with the Trade Copier itself.
If you run an automated strategy (an Expert Advisor) on your Master account, that EA needs a platform that stays open 24/7 to generate its trades. In that case, you'll need either a PC that stays on or a VPS to host your MetaTrader platform.
Think of it this way:
- The EA's job is to place trades on your Master account. It needs somewhere to run.
- Duplikium's job is to copy those trades to your Slave accounts. It runs in our cloud, always.
If your Master places trades manually, or you're copying trades that are already being executed on their account, you don't need a VPS.
The only time a VPS is required is if the Master is running an EA that must stay online 24/7. In that case, the VPS is only needed for the EA on the Master's account, not for the trade copying on your account.

A VPS is a workaround for a limitation that Duplikium simply doesn't have. Because our Trade Copier lives entirely in the cloud, there's nothing for you to host, run, or babysit. That's less cost, less complexity, and one less thing that can break at the worst possible moment.
